Well, we all survived another busy holiday season. Onto 2020!! Since Jan 1st is already here, do you feel that you missed out on planning goals for the new year? Well, with all the craziness of the holiday season who has time to sit & plan out goals for the new year? So this year, my first goal is to take the month of January and plan my goals for the upcoming year. I have ideas floating around in my head & now it’s time to set a plan with a timeline.
I remember how afraid I was when I first started making a plan to accomplish my goals. What if I don’t make it, what if the goal is too big, what will people think if I fail, how do I even get started with a timeline? All these things kept running through my head. At first, I set small goals to make sure I could reach them. Now I set Big, Fat, Scary Goals, because what if I reach them?!! I had set a goal to move title in a year & that ended up being my goal for a 2nd year because I didn’t make it the first time. I’ve found that when I didn’t reach my BFS Goals in my business, I still had personal growth, team growth & income growth & THAT was my ultimate goal anyway!!

4 Quick Tips for a Successful Home Business
Does the day get away from you? Are you constantly distracted at home with chores and projects instead of working on your business?
My 4 quick tips for a successful home business will put you back on track & help you stay there so you will be able to be successful and enjoy working from home.
Getting started right away each morning helps me stay on track. I make my coffee then head into my office to get started. I check emails, messenger, face book & then start on my social media posting. Next I follow up with team members, leaders, & customers who need my attention. Eventually, I take a break for food & get dressed for the day. This routine helps keep me on track.
Appointments outside the house are scheduled for later in the day or evenings. Once I leave the house it’s hard for me to get back on track. When my twins were young I made appointments late in the morning so I could be back in time to “beat the bus”. See, the bus driver wouldn’t drop them off unless someone was there waiting for the girls. I made other appointments after dinner when dad would be home to take over.
Tip #1- Space –
Designate a space where you can work away from distractions. It may a small space in your bedroom, at the table of your barely used dining room, or maybe at the local coffee shop while your kids are at a play date. Now that my girls are in college I have a designated room as my office.
Tip #2 – Time- Schedule chunks of time within your week when you will work.
Sometimes that’s not always possible when you have a couple kids running around so find what works for you. I’ve tried working at nap time but for my girls that wasn’t for very long. Another idea is to have a movie time with snacks later in the afternoon so you may work & they are still in sight. Meet team members at the local park so all the kids can play while you have an informal team meeting catching up on how business is going & sharing ideas. Making a few phone calls after bedtime is another time slot I found very productive. Use timers when on the phone and when on social media to help keep you on schedule.

Tip #3- Prioritize
What’s important today, this week, this month? Use a planner. With so many options you can find one that works for you whether it’s on your computer, your phone or a paper planner. I still use a paper planner along with my phone calendar. I can see a week at a time & a month at a time to keep me on track. Funny how many more activities tend to be accomplished when they are written down. Because my business runs on a 2 week schedule, I have daily & weekly activities to accomplish for week 1 & week 2. Then there’s monthly, 1/2 year & end of year activities.
Tip #4- Continual Learning
Have you ever heard “Learners are Earners” or “Leaders are Readers”? Continuous learning will help you keep up and grow with the changes that come with running your own business. Listen to training videos, books on “tape” & podcasts while cleaning the house, while in the car, while waiting at a Dr.’s appointment whenever you have a little waiting time.
Finding time to read can be challenging. When my girls were in elementary school I had to wait for the bus to drop them off. So, I would go out 10 minutes early, sit in the driveway & read. 5 days a week = 50 minutes of reading. Oh yes!! Summers at the beach always lead to some reading time. I’d bring a box of goodies for all the kids to choose from each time they read for a 1/2 hour & I would read then too. The goodie box was such a hit I had to limit it to 2 goodies a day or we would have run out early in the week. I put in things like small toys, funny pencils, packs of fruit gummies, stickers, gum, & a little candy.

1)Be Social
The more people you have contact with the more you’ll grow your business. I hear all the time “I’ve talked to EVERYONE & no one wants to buy from me.” I love the EVERYONE part. Who’s everyone? Did you talk to the people you used to work with, used to go to school with, used to be neighbors with, the teachers at your kids school, everyone at church, the whole neighborhood, town, city, state… Really EVERYONE? It’s not always the person you know who may want what you have to offer, it could be a friend of a friend of a friend who would love to buy from you or even join you in your business. Think BIGGER!! Join groups on social media that interest you. Follow people on Instagram that have similar interests and interact with them. Join Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest.

2) Learn Business Skills
“When was the last time you ran a business?” Exactly!
Whether you start working for the local fast food restaurant or working for the president you’ll need training. So I don’t understand why so many people new to the business feel they don’t need to learn about the business they just joined. Participate in the company training, follow others in your business & similar businesses. Be consistent, follow up with customers & potential customers. Read books, blogs, or even listen to podcasts about building a small business. “Learners are Earners”

3) Collect Contact Information
One of the easiest ways I’ve found to follow up with people is to connect on Facebook. These days most people are on Facebook. Suggest connecting so you can catch up with an old friend or become friends with someone new. Pull up your Facebook search and ask them to put in their name & send them a friend request. Remember to be social, don’t spam them with buy, buy, buy from me. Be social, catch up, see what they like to do, connect. Ask yourself, “How can I help them solve a problem they have?”
4) Have a Passion for the Product
Find a product you love! It’s so easy to talk to people about something that you believe in & that excites you. Use your product, learn about it & share that information with others. Think about the last time you went to a restaurant you really enjoyed. Did you tell people at work about it the next day? Did you describe the dish you had, why you liked it & about the great service you had? Did you make money on that recommendation? No, you didn’t earn anything from that. So why wouldn’t you use that same enthusiasm about a new product you have? If you have a sample, say of a skincare product or a food product, get excited, share it with others and watch them get excited. When they love it too, they’ll talk about it to their circle of friends & that can bring you more business.

5) Self-Promotion
You don’t have a store, so how are people going to find you? If you aren’t letting people know you are in business, you’re not going to have a business. Think like other small businesses & do what they do. Do people in your town know what you do? Do you set up at local events? The local landscaper, mover, plumber, electrician all have their info on their vehicles, do you? Many wear logo shirts or hats so people know who they are, do you? Maybe it’s something as simple as wearing a name badge with your company name on it, or putting out a lawn sign. Think about it. Where else do you see people promoting their businesses? Have you ever thought about trying that? Maybe it’s time.
